## Key takeaways

- A **vacuum robot** cleans the floor (and usually walls and waterline); a **skimmer** cleans only the surface.
- If trees drop leaves on your pool, a **skimmer plus a vacuum robot** is a common pairing.
- Only one robot we track does both: the **Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra**, at about $2,550–2,700.
- With little surface debris, a vacuum robot alone is usually enough.

Walk the pool-robot aisle and you’ll find two different things sold under similar names. A vacuum robot lives on the bottom, scrubbing the floor and walls. A skimmer robot floats on the surface, picking up whatever lands there. Which one you need depends almost entirely on where your pool’s debris is.

## What each one does

Three kinds of pool robot They solve different problems — and plenty of pools use two of them.

        Corded vacuum robot
Plugs into a poolside power supply and runs as long as you want. Strong, proven, no battery to degrade — but you manage a floating cord and lift 20+ lbs out of the water.

Dolphin Nautilus CC · CC Plus · CC Supreme · Nautilus AG

        Cordless vacuum robot
A rechargeable battery gives 1.5–5 hours per charge and no cord. Newer models climb walls, scrub the waterline and park themselves at the surface — but you recharge every use or two.

Beatbot · Aiper Scuba · Wybot · Seagull SE

        Solar skimmer
Floats on the surface, skimming leaves, pollen and bugs all day on sunlight. It does not vacuum the floor or climb walls, so it complements — rather than replaces — a vacuum robot.

Betta SE Plus · Aiper EcoSurfer S2

- **Vacuum robots** (corded Dolphin Nautilus, cordless Beatbot, Aiper and Wybot) clean the floor, most climb walls and many scrub the waterline. They collect debris in a basket.

- **Skimmer robots** (Betta SE Plus, Aiper EcoSurfer S2) skim the surface for leaves, pollen, insects and hair. Most are solar, so they run all day.

## When a skimmer makes sense

- Trees overhang the pool, or it’s pollen season.

- You get bugs and pet hair on the water.

- You’re tired of skimming with a net, and your floor robot struggles with heavy leaf fall: the sooner leaves are removed, the less they sink and break down.

## When a vacuum robot is enough

If you have a screened enclosure, no trees nearby and mostly dust and algae, the floor is where your debris ends up. A vacuum robot alone is the better spend.

## Best skimmers

The [Betta SE Plus](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/betta-se-plus/) is the best-reviewed: 30-plus hours on a charge, a big 200 µm basket and 4.5 stars across about 3,000 reviews. The [Aiper EcoSurfer S2](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/aiper-ecosurfer-s2/) adds app scheduling, 150 µm filtration and a chlorine-tablet dispenser. Our [head-to-head](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/betta-se-plus-vs-aiper-ecosurfer-s2/) compares them.

## The one-robot option

The [AquaSense 2 Ultra](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2-ultra/) cleans floor, walls, waterline and surface, with a skimming mode that runs for up to about 10 hours. At about $2,550–2,700, it costs more than a $800 vacuum robot plus a $380 skimmer, so it only makes sense if you also want its AI mapping or have a large, complex pool.

## Our pairing advice

For a leafy pool: a mainstream vacuum robot such as the [AquaSense 2](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2/) or the corded [Nautilus CC Plus](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/dolphin-nautilus-cc-plus/), plus a Betta SE Plus skimmer, for about $1,200. If you’re on a budget, a [Sora 10](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-10/) and a skimmer comes in under $900. The [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/) suggests a skimmer when you pick moderate or heavy debris. ## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between a pool skimmer robot and a vacuum robot?
A skimmer robot floats on the surface and removes leaves, pollen, bugs and pet hair. A vacuum robot sits on the bottom and cleans the floor, and usually the walls and waterline. They solve different problems.

### Do I need both a skimmer and a vacuum robot?
If your pool collects a lot of surface debris, yes: a skimmer stops leaves sinking and decomposing, and a vacuum handles what already sank and the algae and dirt on surfaces. With little surface debris, a vacuum robot alone is usually enough.

### Can a skimmer replace a vacuum robot?
No. A skimmer doesn't clean the floor or walls.

### Is there a robot that does both?
The Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra cleans floor, walls, waterline and the water surface in one unit, at about $2,550–2,700. Beatbot's Sora 70 also skims, though we haven't reviewed it.
