Which pool robot fits your pool?

The wrong robot is usually the wrong size or the wrong type: a floor-only cleaner for a pool that needs wall and waterline cleaning, or a small battery on a big pool. Describe your pool and we'll show the robots that actually fit.

Pool type

Length × width. A 16×32 ft pool is 512 sq ft; 20×40 is 800. Not sure? Use the volume calculator.

Waterline

Sizing ladderStarting points by pool floor area (length × width). Walls add area, so size up for deep pools and heavy debris.
Under ~400 sq ft floor Compact / budget robot 12×24 ft and smaller; above-ground pools
~400–800 sq ft Any mainstream robot A typical 16×32 to 20×40 ft rectangular pool
~800–1,200 sq ft Rated ≥ 2,000 sq ft or 40 ft+ Large rectangles, lap pools, deep ends
1,200+ sq ft or freeform Mapping robot, big battery Multi-level, kidney-shaped or very large pools

For your exact pool, use the robot matcher or the pool volume calculator.

How the matching works

We filter out robots built for the other pool type, then check reach. For cordless robots we want a rated floor area of at least 1.5× your floor area, since manufacturer figures are best-case floor-only numbers. When a listing gives runtime but no coverage figure, we estimate coverage at 600 sq ft per hour, the low end of what the rated models imply. For corded robots we compare the longest pool they're rated for with your pool's likely length (assuming a 2:1 rectangle). Then we apply your waterline, power and budget filters and rank by our Guide score, nudged toward cheaper robots that do the job without huge overkill.

Leafy pool? Skimmers don't vacuum the floor, so we show a solar skimmer as an add-on rather than a replacement. See skimmer vs vacuum robot. For the full picture, read our best robotic pool cleaners of 2026 guide.

FAQ

What size robotic pool cleaner do I need?
Pick a robot rated for roughly 1.5× your pool's floor area (length × width) if it's cordless, or rated for a pool longer than yours if it's corded. Ratings assume best-case floor-only cleaning, so wall climbing, dirty water and filter loading all reduce real-world reach.
Do I need a robot that cleans the waterline?
Only if you get a scum or oil line at the waterline (sunscreen, pollen, hard water). Corded Dolphin models like the Nautilus CC Plus skip the waterline; most newer cordless robots from Beatbot and Aiper clean it.
